GP Training

History

The first Vocational training scheme for General Practice was started in Scotland in 1951, but it was not until the early 1970’s that programmes were developed throughout the UK. Prior to this, doctors wishing to become GPs “learnt on the job”. This was often a frightening experience and led to a great variation in the quality of GPs.

Vocational training, which became the GP Specialty Training Progamme in August 2007, is a highly developed programme intended to provide the GPs with the skills, and knowledge to work in the modern NHS, and to continue to evolve and change to meet the challenges of the future.

Requirements

The experience needed to qualify to work as a GP in the UK are laid down in law, and administered by PMETB (Post Graduate Education Training Board). The Milton Keynes GP Specialty Training posts satisfy all of these requirements.

Milton Keynes GP Specialty Training Programme

Milton Keynes is a young, vibrant city which has the quickest growing population in Europe; so when you come to Milton Keynes you will find a "City" full of excellent opportunities for work and professional development.

The scheme has 10 training practices in urban, semi-rural and rural locations which provide a supportive learning environment for those undertaking GP Specialty Training. Throughout the three year programme each trainee is provided with ongoing support by his/her Educational Supervisor (a GP Trainer) and the Programme Directors in addition to the support offered by the staff in each post.

The Milton Keynes Scheme offers rotations which include a range of hospital posts and experience in general practice, which combine a broad clinical experience with innovative and extensive learning opportunities in clinical areas and at the Post Graduate Education Centre.

The scheme is also involved in the Foundation Training Programme offering general experience for FY2 doctors.
