The GP Appraisal section is designed to provide practices and individual GPs with some guidance on the appraisal process and to make the necessary forms easily available so that they can be completed on a Word Processing package. By clicking on the labels at the top you will be taken to other pages and links to the various resources.
Appraisal for GPs has been carried out nationally since April 2002. The process has been taken up by most PCTs since April 2003 and all MK Principals in General Practice whether in PMS or nGMS are appraised annually
Non-principals currently registered with Milton Keynes PCT are now appraised annually as a condition of their remaining on the 'Performers list'
The process is overseen by the Clinical Governance Dept of the PCT and the CPD Tutor Dr Ann Howard.
You will be aware that the GMC is proposing to issue licenses to practice in the forthcoming year. This will start the ball rolling towards the system of revalidation and it has been confirmed that yearly appraisal will be the cornerstone of this process.
The underlying principle of appraisal is to provide evidence relating to your day job, reflecting on your work, relationships with patients and colleagues, and keeping up to date, and everyone is encouraged to start working towards revalidation so that in 5 years time it will be a formality and the vast majority of GPs will be revalidated without problems.
The RCGP has recently published a document “Guide to the Revalidation of General Practitioners” (see Links to Revalidation) and this gives the following list of evidence that will be required for revalidation, and which you should start to include in your portfolio:
Description of all roles
Exceptional circumstances e.g. illness, maternity
Evidence of activity and effective participation in annual appraisal
PDP for each year
Review of previous PDPs showing needs met and improvement in patient care
Record of 250 learning credits (over 5 years) – A credit is a unit of professional development that is a product of the impact of a developmental activity and to a lesser extent the challenge involved in its completion. Credits are self-assessed and verified at appraisal (RGGP Guide to revalidation)
MSFs from colleagues (approved by GMC)
Results of Patient Survey
Description of any cause for concern or complaint. Demonstrate resolution and learning
Significant events that demonstrate reflection/change
Clinical Audits
Standard of probity and healthcare – registration with GP, evidence of insurance etc
Additional evidence such as statements relating to other roles, evaluation as appraiser, etc
Appraisal offers opportunities and threats. It gives us an opportunity to look closely at our own practice, at our own performances and discuss them with trained and unbiased colleagues in whom you feel confident. Your appraiser will not be making a judgement on the quality of your care. He/she will be working to RCGP guidelines to establish that your appraisal meets the required standards, and assisting you with the next years PDP to address any gaps in your portfolio for revalidation. Appraisal for the individual GP should be a source of professional and personal support and a means to improve professional practice and job satisfaction.
