GP trainers

What is a GP Trainer?

A GP trainer is an experienced GP (usually) who looks after a learner in practice, either for 1 year for registrars or for 3 or 4 months for an SHO. Their practices are regularly assessed to check that they are good enough and safe for training. More recently approved trainers will also have an educational qualification too.

What do they do?

GP trainers act as teachers, coaches and mentors to their learners providing them with a range of learning and practical experiences. They ensure that the registrars have the opportunities to develop to their potential and to complete all the necessary components of summative assessment.

Julian Lambley Stony Stratford Health Centre See below
Dr Chambers and partners have 4 full time and 3 part-time doctors, a team of 9 skilled practice nursing staff. We have a friendly experienced administration support team. We are located in the centre of Stony Stratford, an old market town forming the north western corner of Milton Keynes. The health centre contains a full range of attached services including physio and X-ray. We serve both the town and surrounding rural villages. We maintain a high standard of care and hold the RCGP Quality Practice Award. We are fully computerised and consider ourselves to be progressive. Out of hours is delegated to MKDOC.

We have been a very good training practice for 20 years and I also have a considerable experience of training, including a period abroad. I have also been an appraiser for 2 years and am a team leader for training practice assessment visits for the region. The practice hopes to have a second trainer within the next year.

Lynn Moore Hanslope Surgery See below
Hanslope is a small village surgery just north of Milton Keynes. Lynn has been a trainer since 1996 with Graham starting in 2001. We are part of a larger partnership, which covers much of the area between Northampton and Milton Keynes from 4 separate sites. The registrar is based at Hanslope, but has the opportunity to gain experience at other sites in their training. We have a total of 8 full partners and one salaried doctor who have a wide range of interests so there are numerous learning opportunities. The whole practice welcomes the opportunity to be part of the learning process.
